»Hands-on introduction to Simgrid: A versatile network simulator«
2018-10-13, 15:10–16:40, Α3

The SimGrid simulator is a tool of choice for scientists studying Grids, P2P, Cloud and HPC. We will start with a 30-minute introduction on this simulator, and then propose the audience to run various examples depending on their centers of interest.

SimGrid is a scientific instrument to study the behavior of large-scale distributed systems such as Grids, Clouds, HPC or P2P systems. It can be used to evaluate heuristics, prototype applications or even assess legacy MPI applications.

In the first 30 minutes of this workshop, we will present the basics of Simgrid, providing the context and motivations for this tool, before providing some insight on its power.

Then, we will turn onto an hands-on session, which goal will be to jump-start the audience into using this tool. By leveraging the rich set of examples provided with Simgrid to match at best the particular interest of participants. In particular, we might simulate basic network applications models such as ping-pong, master-workers, or bit-torrent. Or we might simulate various MPI benchmarks. Or we might simulate the energy consumed by a set of computers running abstract loads... We have many options.
